The first steps to success

so the number on top of the fraction is the 'numerator' and the number on the bottom is called a 'denominator'. The denominator is what the fraction is out of so the fraction on the left is out of 5 - the number on the top is 3 making it 3/5 (pronounced: three fifths)
that is how we write out fractions
How we add fraction together
firstly lets start on the basic method to add fractions together
if we had 1/3+1/3 and wanted to know the answer we follow some quick steps to success
1)make sure the denominator is the same
2)add together the numerator values- in this case we add together 1+1=2
3)remember the numerator stays the same so we end up with 2/3
therefore 1/3+1/3=2/3
fractions do get a lil complicated but theres nothin' to it as long as you keep hold of the basics then nothing goes wrong
now try and work out
2/3 + 1/5
now this fraction can still be worked out even though the denominators are different
3 and 5 are both multiples of 15 so you need to get both denominators to 15
Times 3 by 5 which equals 15 now times 5 to the numerator as whatever you do to the denominator you MUST do to the numerator which gives you 10/15 follow the same rules to work out 1/5 times the numerator and denominator by three which equals 3/15
so you get the equation 10/15 +3/15=13/15
